The Devil Queen

How my wife and I sold our souls to the Queen Anne Victorian we tried to save.

Location: Crow Mountain, Arkansas, United States

Synopsis: This is a cautionary tale. A seriously disturbed couple find the charming, old ruin of a Queen Anne Victorian in Russellville, Arkansas, and buy it for $1.00. They tore the roof off, cut it in half, and had it moved to some land they owned sixteen miles away because they didn't know any better. Since then, they have hired and fired contractors, had all of their tools stolen, re-wired, re-plumbed, insulated, and essentially rebuilt the entire house. Their only problem is that after four years it still isn't finished. Now they are tired, broke, and wonder what in the hell it is they've done to themselves. And, it's haunted.

A Freaking Miracle

This old house is on the 1000 block of 3rd Street, a couple of lots down from Cross Street in Little Rock. Defying all odds, someone is fixing this house up instead of demolishing it for a parking lot. This house has been in need of some attention for years. I drove by it a couple of weeks ago, and I was shocked to see all the scaffolding around it. I'm not sure how old this house is, my guess is that it was built between 1870-1910 (probably closer to the 1870 end of the spectrum). Many thanks to whoever is funding this project.

I love it when old houses and buildings are bought and fixed-up. Jackson, MI is going through an urban revival right now and it seems every block has one or two houses with contractors busily replacing, roofs, siding, you name it. It's a good feeling.

Yeah, I love that house. It's right around the corner from where I work. If I remember correctly, it was on the Quapaw Quarter tour back in the 70's and had deteriorated to the point it's at in the meantime.

Check out the mini-revival that's going on over in the Argenta section of NLR, too. Makes you feel all warm and ...
